President declares open new Sri Lankan High Commission in Uganda

[May 14, 2013]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni opened the new Sri Lankan High Commission in Kampala, Uganda yesterday (13).

The new Sri Lankan High Commission in Uganda is the 62nd Sri Lankan diplomatic mission abroad and the 6th in the African continent. The last three were opened during President Rajapaksa’s tenure.

Broadband charges: Sri Lanka ranks world’s lowest

Sri Lanka has been ranked No.1 in the world with the lowest entry level fixed broadband charges, according to a report published by the International Telecommunication Union report Measuring the Information Society 2012, the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRC) said yesterday (13).

Political consultations between Sri Lanka and Viet Nam
[May 13, 2013]
The Second Round of Political Consultations between Sri Lanka and Viet Nam was held recently in Hanoi.

Mr. Karunatilaka Amunugama Secretary, External Affairs of Sri Lanka led the Sri Lankan delegation with Dr. K. G. Ivan Amarasinghe, the Ambassador in Viet Nam in attendance. Ms. Nguyen Phuong Nga, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam led the Vietnamese delegation with Mr. Vuong Hai Nam, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Viet Nam in attendance. The consultations were held in a cordial and friendly atmosphere, stated the Ministry of External Affairs.

Reminiscing the historical and cultural similarities of the two countries and their peoples, the two sides discussed issues ranging from political to economic in the regional and international fora, and resolved to work together in pursuing their common goals of interest.

Sri Lanka has made significant progress going by international criteria on poverty alleviation, Chairman and Managing Director of the Sovereign Rating Committee, Standard and Poor’s Sovereign Rating Mission John Chambers said. He is also impressed by the country’s development, and facilities provided to investors.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived in Kampala, Uganda, this afternoon on his four-day official visit to the East-Central African country.

Prince Harry, who is currently on a visit to the US has said Sri Lanka is among the countries where landmines can be eradicated in the next five years, if funding is sustained, UK based Express News Agency said.

The Sri Lankan waters off the northern coast of the island – between India and this country – may well be the most poached fishing grounds in the world to judge by the numbers of Tamil Nadu and other South Indian fishing craft who enter this area each day.

The Central Bank has decided to reduce the policy interest rates aiming to boost economic growth, the Central Bank said in its monetary policy review Friday.

“Tamil fishermen pose the biggest threat to our livelihood,” said M. Lingarajan, a Sri Lankan Tamil fisherman based in Jaffna, on Wednesday.
