President to receive second interim report of Commission on Missing Persons

[August 25, 2015]
The Chairman of the Presidential Commission to Inquire into Complaints on Missing Persons, Maxwel Paranagama will hand over the second interim report of the Commission to President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday.

Mr. Paranagama told media that the first interim report was handed over to the President on April, 10 and that the government had taken steps to implement its recommendations.

The three-member Commission appointed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa on August 15, 2013 was mandated to Inquire into Complaints on Missing Persons and ascertain their fate, responsibility and whereabouts from 1983 to May 2009 and to ascertain the crimes allegedly committed during the last stages of the war with a view to accountability and responsibility.

Governor of the Northern Province H.M.G.S. Palihakkara, a prominent Sri Lankan diplomat and former Foreign Secretary who replaced Major General (Retd.) G.A. Chandrasiri, in an exclusive interview at his office in Jaffna, told Ceylon Today that the IDPs will be resettled within the next five years leaving no one in camps. He also said that the LLRC was a success but it was a failure in implementing it. A member of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) Board, the Governor said, “I think there must be a political consensual decision making culture in the country. You can differ in other matters like on the economy of the country, but on national issue, you must have consensus. As long as you don’t have consensual approaches, problems will continue.”

‘I will stand by Sri Lanka to correct misconceptions within international community’ – Tony Blair

[August 24, 2015]
The former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said that he will stand by Sri Lanka to correct the misconceptions about the country within the international community.

He made these observations when he met with President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat today (24). The former British Prime Minister arrived in Sri Lanka recently on a private visit.

Mr. Tony Blair commended the President for conducting recently concluded Parliamentary Elections in a free and fair manner.

He also appreciated the steps taken by the President Sirisena to build reconciliation and to restore democracy throughout the country, while giving proper leadership to the country.

Saman Ekanayake appointed Prime Minister’s Secretary

[August 24, 2015]
Mr. Saman Ekanayake, who is a senior Special Grade officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service, was appointed to the post of Secretary to the Prime Minister.

He received his appointment letter from President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat today (24).

Mr. Ekanayake is a graduate of the University of Peradeniya in Sociology, and he has also obtained a Masters Degree from Post Graduate Institute of Management of Sri Jayewardenepura University on Public Administration.

President Maithripala Sirisena who visited Kinniya and Sampur in the Eastern Provinceyesterday (Aug. 22) participated in ashirvada puja atKali Kovil in Trincomalee.

The ashirvada puja was organized by the member of Tamil National Alliance Mr. R. Sambandan. The President had cordial discussions with the devotees who gathered at the Kovil.

President handed over land deeds to people in Sampur
[August 22, 2015]
A ceremony was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena to hand over the land deeds to 234 war displaced families in Sampur, today (22).

During the tenure of the past government 818 acre of lands had been vested with the BOI by using a special gazette notification, but after the Hon. Maithripala Sirisena came into power the lands had been taken back to the Government and returned it to the original owners.

People appealed to President to seek a second term to fulfill people’s expectations
[August 22, 2015]
People of Kinniya appealed to President Maithripala Sirisena to seek a second term to fulfill the expectations of the people.

The people made this request when the President visited Kinniya and met the people there today (Aug. 22).

They told the President that the development expected by them has not yet been received to their areas. They also presented the problems faced by them to the President. These included the issues on agriculture, lands, health and education.

President’s Coordinating Secretary, Attorney at Law Rajika kodithuwakku sworn in as a member of Municipal Council, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, before President Maithripala Sirisena today (Aug. 22).

Mr. Kodithuwakku succeeds Mr. Ranjith Ponnamperuma who was in the Municipal Council, Jayawardenapura, Kotte.

Mr. Kodithuwakku, who is a lawyer in profession, entered the active politics in 1999.

Proposals for three national programs will be presented to first cabinet meeting - President

The leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka before President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat today (21).

After Mr. Wickremesinghe took oaths as the new PM, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP), to work together in the next Parliament.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press briefing that the general election in Sri Lanka went on peacefully and smoothly.

"The United National Front for Good Governance led by Ranil Wickremesinghe won the election and will form the new government. We express our congratulations to the Sri Lankan people. We believe that under the leadership of the new government, Sri Lanka will achieve greater progress in its economic and social development," Chunying said.

United National Front for Good Governance wins General Election

[August 20, 2015]
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon congratulated President Maithripala Sirisena for conducting recently concluded Parliamentary Elections in a free and fair manner.
In a telephone conversation with the President today (19), the Secretary General commended the President, the Government and the election process for conducting a free and fair election without any interference.

President Maithripala Sirisena says he would strongly take the drug prevention program forward, obtaining the international support. He added that new technology will be greatly utilized in this campaign.

The President said he would not hesitate to strictly implement legal provisions against drug dealers, irrespective of their social status.

The United National Party led United National Front for Good Governance won the General Election in a convincing fashion, winning 93 out of the 196 seats on offer, polling a total of 5,098,927 votes.

President casts his vote

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on the new government in Sri Lanka under United National Front (UNF) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to make further progress on good governance, accountability and reconciliation.

"The Secretary-General applauds the people of Sri Lanka for their peaceful and broad-based participation in the parliamentary elections of August 17," a statement issued by UNSG's spokesperson said.

President Maithripala Sirisena in a Special Message to the Nation said the election held yesterday was the most peaceful election in the political history of this country, ever witnessed since the very first General Election held in1947.

“And you all know very well that the just concluded election was a completely a different experience. An Election of a different form,” he said.

President Maithripala Sirisena cast his vote at Sri Vidyaloka Temple at about 2.00pm today (Aug. 17) for the General Election 2015.

General Election 2015: Voting commences
Government won’t take any decision that would harm local & export markets – President

President discusses on national programme for cancer treatment

[August 17, 2015]
Voting for General Election 2015 commenced at 7am today (August 17). It concludes at 4pm. The Elections Commissioner requests all eligible to vote early and go to the polling centre with a valid ID.

Over 6100 candidates from a record 35 political parties and 200 independent groups are vying for 196 parliamentary seats at today’s General Elections. Polling will be conducted in 12,314 polling centers island-wide, including in the seven islets in the Northern Province.

President Maithripala Sirisena says as a government he would not take any decision that would harm the local market and the export market.

He said his government policy is to extend higher patronage for local productions and local industries. He also pointed out that the private sector should act strongly in the export sector. “The Government should have a key policy to strengthen the private sector”, he said.

Committed to hold free & fair election - President

Commonwealth expects Sri Lanka will hold free & fair election

[August 13, 2015]
All necessary arrangements have been made to conduct free and fair General elections on 17th this month.

There are 12,314 polling stations in the 22 administrative districts while the total number of registered voters for this General Election is 15,044,490.

President Maithripala Sirisena pledged to hold the upcoming 2015 Parliamentary Elections in a free and fair manner.

The President also said that he will create an environment wherethe Election Commissioner andthe law enforcement officers headed by the Inspector General of Policewill be able to do their duties without any undue interference.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Posts has been removed from his post by President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (Aug. 07), after considering of a complaint and recommendation for removal by Election Commissioner.

The removed Secretary has been transferred to the Ministry of State Administration. Additional Secretary of the Ministry of State Administration has appointed him as the Acting Secretary there.

President Maithripala Sirisena said the government will create an environment where the business community should be able to operate freely without interference from politicians. He said this in his address to the closing ceremony of the Economic Summit 2015 at the Cinnamon Grand yesterday (August 5). The Summit was organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (Aug. 04) met Mr. Ananda Withana who was critically injured by the suicide bomb attack aimed at the President during his time as the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Services in 2008.

The President went to Mr. Withana’s house in Piliyandala last evening to inquire into his health. He inquired about the medical treatment for Mr. Withana and held cordial discussion with his family members and close relations.

President Maithripala Sirisena extended the 5-year term of Ven. Dr Bellanwila Wimalaratana Nayake Thero as Chancellor of the Shrijayawardanepura University for a further period of five years. The President handed over the letter of extension to Ven Wimalaratana Thero at the Bellanvila Rajamaha Viharaya yesterday (August 4).

The President offered pooja at the temple and obtained blessings from the Maha Sangha on this occasion.

The President requested the support of all friendly countries of Sri Lanka to control the kidney disease from which about 1,000 people die annually. The President made this observation during a meeting with Ambassadors and representatives of international organizations at the Presidential Secretariat last.
