President presents Scroll to new Maha Nayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter

President Maithripala Sirisena said as the Head of State he expects the Maha Sangha to take the lead in building a disciplined society rich in moral values.

He made these observations at the ceremony to present the Scroll to the newly elected Mahanayaka of the Asgiriya chapter, Most Venerable Galagama Sri Aththadassi Thero at the historic Magul Maduwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy yesterday (6).

“Even though many countries in the world are more advanced than us materially and technologically, the human values or principles that can be seen in our people cannot be seen in the people of those countries,” the President further said. All of us must work together to take our country forward while protecting the core values of Buddhism, he added.

President emphasizes to foreign envoys the tourism potential tells

Four High Commissioners and an Ambassador presented credentials to President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat today (July 7).

Those who presented credentials were Japanese Ambassador Kenichi Suganuma, Ghana High Commissioner Samuel Panyin Yalley, Kenyan High Commissioner Florence Imisa Weche, Singapore High Commissioner S Chandra Das and Seychelles High Commissioner Philippe Le Gail.

President Sirisena, referring to close bilateral relations with Sri Lanka and the countries represented by the new envoys expressed confidence that they would strive to further strengthen bilateral friendship and cooperation in many areas including trade, investment and tourism.

The President also recalled the close economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and Japan and the cooperation with countries such as Ghana and Kenya as leading members of the nonaligned movement.

While Japanese Ambassador and High Commissioner of Seychelles will be based in Colombo, others will function as non-resident High Commissioners. High Commissioner Phillippe Le Gail is the first resident High Commissioner of Seychelles.

Stating this, President’s Media Division said the President of the Party, President Maithripala Sirisena has not come to any agreement on a Prime Ministerial candidate.


Economy grows by 6.4% in 1st quarter 2015

The Sri Lankan economy expanded by 6.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2015, with positive contributions from all three key sectors of the economy,the Central Bank said.

President Maithripala Sirisena says the Government expects to increase per capita income to 6000 American Dollars, within next five years.

He said a comprehensive development will be formed in every field including investments and industries on this regard.

The President was speaking at the occasion to deliver the benefits of Consolidated Gem Mining Projects of Seethawaka River, among the people in the area. The ceremony was held today (June 29) in the auditorium of Dehiovita Pradeshiya Sabha.

Retiring Sri Lankan Consul Dr Thomas Cheung called on President Maithripala Sirisena today (June 29) at the Presidential Secretariat to bid farewell.

President thanks Dr Cheung for the services rendered during his 29 year long tenure as Sri Lanka Consul in Hong Kong. He made a special mention about assisting a housing project in Kolonnawa and providing generous grants to Nikaweratiya Hospital and to the Housing Development Authority for construction of small houses for the homeless.
