Being
a frontline town, Vavuniya has been a strategic location in Sri
Lanka’s conflict between government and LTTE forces. While the town
is under government control, the movement of LTTE cadres in the town
area is an open secret. This and a history of clashes have resulted in
a certain aura of
insecurity that constantly looms over this town. Vavuniya’s history
has tagged it with a reputation that dissuades visits by people in the
south of Sri Lanka. Lately however, Vavuniya indicates hopes of peace
and progress.

Voters
throughout Sri Lanka will wend their way to polling stations December
5, to elect 196 representatives to the 12th Parliament of
Sri Lanka.
The
last Parliament was dissolved on October 10, after completing only one
year of its six-year term. The dissolution came after nine members of
the ruling People’s Alliance defected to the opposition lending
support to an opposition United National Party sponsored no-confidence
motion which was to have been debated on October 11.

Some
describe the current drought in Sri Lanka as the worst in 50 years,
while others say it is just a little out of the ordinary. The entire
island has been suffering from the effects of the drought for several
months. Yet, as ironic as it may be, the situation abruptly became a
national issue in a matter of days.
