First International bridal wear factory to be opened in North Central Province

The first BOI approved bridal wear factory of Carlton Garments (Pvt) Ltd., a subsidiary of Maxtel Ltd from Hong Kong, will be opened in Medawachchiya in the North Central Province today by the Chief Guest on the occasion, President and Chief Executive Officer of David's Bridal Inc Bob Huth and  BOI, Chairman Thilan Wijesinghe who will be the guest of honour. 

The entire production of the factory will be sold to David's Bridal Inc., the largest retailer of superior bridal wear in the USA. David's Bridal is a speciality Bridal store. By the end of 2001 it will have 155 stores with an estimated retail sales value of US$300 million.

"The bridal wear factory, with an investment of Rs. 175 million will employ 450 persons during the first stage and 900 persons during the second stage of its operation. The factory premises consist of a fully air-conditioned production area. Among other facilities is a dormitory for 200 workers," he said. 

The Textile and Apparel Sector is one of the most significant and dynamic contributors to Sri Lanka's economy. As a fully-integrated industry, with a firm resource base and superior logistical support service, it has grown over the years to become the primary export earner and the largest single employer of the manufacturing industry. The industry earned over US $ 2 billion on exports in 1999, the spokesman said.
