The Bindunuwewa incident which created great chaos in life in hill country made headlines in both local and foreign media. This sudden eruption was an appetiser for those who were awaiting to damage the credibility of the ruling People’s Alliance. However President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had taken immediate measures to bring the culprits of the incident to book. Further a special mission has been sent to hill country to conduct further investigation. The mission comprises of Secretary to the President K.Balapatabandi, Minister of Samurdhi, Rural Development & Parliamentary Affairs S.B Dissanayake, Acting DIG Ananda Raja and DIG Sumanasekara. Meanwhile special Police team conducting investigations into incidents which occurred last Saturday and Sunday in Nuwara Eliya and Talawakele has taken 20 suspects who are alleged to have been involved in various violent acts, into custody. The investigators also have arrested seven persons who were alleged to have looted the shops setting fire to them, Senior SP D. A. de Fonseka, Head of the special operation in Nuwara Eliya district said. Meanwhile P. Chandrasekaran, President of Upcountry People’s Front (UPF) was further detained for questioning by a special team of the CID. He was taken in on Monday for questioning several incidents took place in the hilly areas. Chandrasekeran is alleged to have led the mob which attacked properties and set fire to the Talawakele railway station in addition to provoking lawlessness in the area.
