President
Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga appealed to the nation to act with
restraint and not be deceived by the acts of violence, which are committed
by groups acting in collaboration with the LTTE.
Addressing
the nation on national television and radio on Tuesday, the President
asked the Tamil and Muslim community not to be deceived by acts of
violence and also added “ we exhort all people of this country not to
get agitated or provoked by the malicious efforts of opportunistic
individuals.”
“
Despite the killing of the Chief Incumbent of the Dimbulagala Raja Maha
Viharaya, bombing of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, there were various
malevolent elements who attempted to incite the people in connivance with
opposition politicians and we were able to successfully avert a possible
crisis following the people acting with wisdom and restraint,” she said.
“
It is now clear that the LTTE and certain ultra nationalist groups are
conspiring against the government in Bindunuwewa, in Nuwara Eliya and
Colombo. We have taken all steps to prevent this situation,” the
President said.
