[02 Nov 2000]

In an interview with Japan’s Nikkei Shimbun, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar said due to antipathy between India and Pakistan SAARC activities remain stagnant.

Minister Kadirgamar stressed that the final objectives would be the creation of a free trade zone in SAARC and indicated his idea to promote close cooperation with other SAARC countries.

He further stated that Sri Lanka’s aim is to become a hub in the field of finance and information technology taking full advantage of the geographically superior position in South Asia characterised by a number of good ports.
