The Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), a Tamil charity allegedly raising funds for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is being formally inquired by the Charity Commission in the UK, sources revealed. While it is a well-known fact that a number of charities in the UK are controlled by the LTTE to raise funds for the terrorists in Sri Lanka and also to promote Tiger propaganda, this recent probe comes after a complaint to the Commission by the Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Human Rights Group, Lord Avebury. The Charity Commission is a UK Government department, which has legal powers to investigate and deal with cases of fraud within charities. This is certainly not the first time that Tamil charities and fundraising groups, linking with the LTTE have been accused of raising funds in the UK for terrorist activities in Sri Lanka. The Commission has taken the allegations relating to the TRO very seriously and is keen on making its findings public, sources revealed. Meanwhile, the TRO has been silent about any allegations against them and refuses to comment to the media. The Sri Lankan government has voiced its concern many a time about Tamil fundraising activities in the West, through which the LTTE raises funds for their cold-blooded struggle, demanding a separate homeland in the country, which has killed thousands over the past 17 years.
