Russian merchant vessel hijacked by Tigers
[03 Nov 2000]

In escaping a Naval attack last Wednesday night, the Sea Tigers belonging to the LTTE hijacked a Russian merchant vessel, M V Utyos, in the sea off Mullaitivu, military sources, said yesterday.

“ They were successful in their attack as they completely destroyed and sunk two Tiger logistic boats and fighter crafts,” a Navy spokesman said.

The incident took place when Naval troops engaged a cluster of LTTE boats and four fighter craft transporting firearms, fuel and ammunition to terrorist held areas.

After seeing one of the two logistic boats explode in a huge fireball, Naval troops chased the other three fighter crafts of the Sea Tigers causing heavy damages.

The Sea Tigers who anchored the merchant vessel in the sea shore and escaped to the land area in Mullaitivu.

The Vessel with 22 crewmen is in Naval custody, while at least 20 Tigers would have died in the attack.

The Navy will question the 22 crew members before releasing the vessel.
