The President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga made a lengthy phone conversation with the Indian Prime Minister yesterday, and discussed the current situation in Sri Lanka regarding matters of mutual interest during the telephone conversation, the Indian High Commission press release stated. The release further stated the details of the telephone conversation between the two Heads of States as, “The President enquired after the health of the Prime Minister who recently underwent knee surgery. The Prime Minister reiterated his condolences on the recent demise of the former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Mrs. Sirimavo R. D. Bandaranaike.” “The discussions covered the measures taken by the Government of Sri Lanka, to restore calm in the wake of the recent violent incidents, including President Kumaratunge’s address to the Nation, on 29th October in this connection, steps towards the full realisation of the potential of the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade agreement, and issues of Free Trade Agreement and issues of mutual concern such as the impact of the rise in oil prices on their respective economies” the release further added. The conclusion of the press release stated, “The Prime Minister of India invited Her Excellency the President to visit India at her convenience.”
