JVP, the leftist party and the newly formed party, Sihala Urumaya refuse to co- operate with the government in finding a durable solution to the country’s burning ethnic problem. Both these parties have shown their opposition to the Norwegian facilitation to find a suitable political solution to the country’s ethnic conflict. The Norwegian team held talks with the LTTE in Wanni on October 31 and November 1, after which they returned to Colombo and reported back to President Kumaratunga. Further the Reuters reports said that the Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim said Thursday that separatist Tamil leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was serious about holding talks with the Sri Lankan government to resolve the country's 17-year ethnic war. However the main opposition, United National Party [UNP] and the other Tamil parties have urged the government to make use of the opportunity and commence talks with LTTE. Meanwhile commenting on the JVP and Sihala Urumaya stance, TULF General Secretary R. Sampathan told a local newspaper that these two parties stand crystallizes their short-sightedness and reluctance to find political solution for the ethnic conflict. He further said, “ In my view, people who are opposed to the Norwegian efforts are those who desire that LTTE must be militarily defeated and the Tamils should not be given anything”. JVP General Secretary Tilwin Silva expressing his party’s view, brought to light the fact that the Western nations including USA have no genuine desire to act as peace makers. “These countries want to worsen the war situation in the North so that they could sell arms to us. They are keen to disrupt our economy and Norway, too, has this in her mind” a part of the JVP statement said.
