The Air Force will resume civilian flights to Jaffna within the next ten days after a lapse of seven and a half months. Arrangements have been made to charter two AN 32 aircrafts to fly daily between Ratmalana and Palaly, Military Spokesman, Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said yesterday. “ There will be six flights a day exclusively for civilians, but the actual number of flights will depend on the number of passengers,” he added. Following the crash of the AN 26 transporting military personnel, in March this year in Talawa, Anuradhapura, the Air Force stopped civilian flights between Ratmalana and Palaly. The crash was due a to a suspected missile attack by the LTTE from the Vilpattu jungles, which killed forty security personnel and four Russian crewmen. Earlier in 1998, a commercial airline crashed killing 52 civilians. Around 300,000 living in Jaffna Peninsula are now virtually cut off from the rest of the country due to the treacherous acts of the LTTE, who claim to be fighting for these very same Tamil people who are trapped in their own homes.
