Temporary ban of fishing in Jaffna Lagoon lifted
[08 Nov 2000]

The security forces yesterday lifted the temporary ban of fishing in the Jaffna Lagoon which was imposed last Friday for security reasons for the for the fishermen in Colombuturai area, sources reported.

Naval units on petrol in the Jaffna Lagoon took seven fishing boats into custody. The boats had gone out for fishing from Colomboturai area around 10 a.m. yesterday as they had landed in a LTTE controlled area at Kalmunai Point in Pooneryn, which is a prohibited area for fishing boats.

At present 50 fishermen are in custody of the Army. And their passes for fishing in the Jaffna Lagoon have been confiscated for violating the instructions of the Security Forces.

The government was compelled to impose the temporary ban of fishing in the Jaffna Lagoon as the separatist LTTE tigers took cover of the fishermen to launch attacks on the Security Forces.

Amid these threats to the security of the area the government has taken the rather bold decision to lift the ban of fishing as fishing is the livelihood of the majority.
