Nimalan Saundranayagam, newly elected Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) MP for Batticaloa District was shot dead yesterday, by unidentified gunmen at Kiran in the Batticaloa District, 303 km from Colombo, while his security officer is seriously injured, sources revealed. Military spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said that the incident occurred when the MP and his security officer were returning to Saundranayagam’s home in at Chenkaladi on his motor cycle last evening at around 5.30 pm. The two gunmen who killed the MP later fled the area while the pillion rider, Yoganathan the security officer was seriously injured and admitted to Batticaloa Hospital. Saundranayagam was the father of two who was not successful at the 1994 Parliamentary Elections as a TULF candidate, but was elected this year. The TULF is a party comprising Tamils who refused to take up arms in Sri Lanka’s ethnic war.
