Special peace programme to soothe hill country

Due to the spreading communal disturbances in the hill country special programme was initiated by the Government to protect the families of the estate sector.   

This step was taken when the General Secretary of PA, Agricultural Minister, D M Jayaratne met Senior Police Officials in the area. The meeting, which took place at Gannoruwa, on 6^th November 2000, was attended by the Divisional Secretaries of the area, which concentrated, on ensuring peace in the hill country.  The programme will aim to prevent the repetition of violent incidents, which took place in the hill country following the massacre at the Bindunuwewa rehabilitation camp.    

To maintain a special record of the residents in the estate areas and to introduce a special identity card for the estate workers and their families were discussed in the meeting.  The programme will be launched from Kandy district.
