Special Operation Unit set up to reinforce security in Colombo
[09 Nov 2000]

A special Operation Unit [SOU] had been set up to carry out sudden raids in various parts of the Colombo district, the chief SSP A. Kamaldeen said yesterday.

The unit had been set up under the supervision of the DIG (Colombo) Bodhi Liyanage. He further stated that they have taken this decision to control the escalating trend of violence that threatens the lives of many unarmed innocent people.

Recently the local newspapers have reported several incidents to which different underworld gangs had been directly involved. Furthermore the police will search the public and take suspicious persons into custody. "We are very much concerned about the security of the public,"  the DIG said.

The main objective of the new unit is to take actions to curb terrorist activities and drug trafficking. These operations would take place in addition to road barriers existing at present.

The unit consists of 600 members. All officers attached to SOU had been provided with special training under the Special Task Force. The unit had been equipped with bulletproof vehicles and modern weaponry.
