A media authority will be set up soon to provide more benefits to those engaged in print and electronic media, a senior official of the Ministry of Information and Media said. Media Minister, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa issued a directive to ministry authorities to take prompt action to set up the authority. Action will also be taken to find solutions to problems faced by journalists in carrying out their duties. The Minister is also looking into the possibility of introducing a pension scheme for local media personnel. A special insurance scheme Panhinda has also been launched. District media units have been set up to create public awareness. In addition, the ministry plans to set up a fully fledged training centre for journalists.
