Jayawardenepura University unruly mob backed by the JVP student’s Unions
[13 Nov 2000]

Last Wednesday the breakout of unruly mob at the Sri Lanka Jayawardenepura University was backed by the JVP biased student Unions and the sources confirmed that the mob had turned into an outrage.

The University had granted only limited number of hostel seats for students.  Although that is the case, the JVP influenced minority, had forcibly converted the classrooms into hostel rooms and was getting food from the authorities.

The clashes among the student groups were mainly due to the ongoing Student Council Elections.  The disturbance has caused injuries to a University lecturer, a minor employee and several non- JVP students.  As the lecturer was from a neighboring village the assault has enraged the villagers.  Finally with the unarmed policemen who entered the scene had brought the mob under control.

The groups, which opposed inhuman ragging, told a recent press conference in Colombo, “ the Socialist Student’s Union and the United Student’s Union were responsible for the incident on Wednesday. ”
