The Government has decided to hold the upcoming local government elections under the old first-past-the-post system, Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister, Nandimithra Ekanayake said. “ The Commission appointed by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to review the present Local Government Election system and recommend suitable reforms has already handed over to the government its report,” sources said. According to Minister Ekanayake the next local Government Elections would be conducted on a system recommended by that Commission. The
Minister explained that the only setback they were facing at the moment in
holding the local elections under the old ward system was the problem of
demarcating Pradeshiya Sabha Wards though there was no problem in
demarcating Municipal Council and Urban Council wards.
