Lankan skipper to serve as UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador

Sri
Lankan cricket captain Sanath Jayasuriya who created a history in the
recent Sharjah tour will be appointed UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for Sri
Lanka for a period of two years, Country programme advisor for UNAIDS Dr.
Hemantha Jayawardena said.
“The
Master Blaster” having the second best one day international score, will
be appointed in a special occasion at the BMICH by Chairman of UNAIDS and
WHO representative in Sri Lanka, Peter Hybsier on Friday.
“Since
this year’s international theme for Aids is ‘Men and Aids’, we were
looking out for a male. Sanath Jayasuriya was chosen as a person who can
make an impact on young Sri Lankans,” Dr. Jayawardena told.
The
cricket star’s work as ambassador will involve ‘making public
statements where there is good public coverage, according to Dr.
Jayawardena.
Jayasuriya
is expected to target to mainly the Sri Lankan youth who are the most
sexually active social group. Several countries have their popular figures
as special UNAIDS goodwill ambassadors.
