The ruling people's Alliance government and president Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunga have taken measures to accelerate the rehabilitation and reconstruction projects of Eastern Province, the secretary to the President K. Balapatabendi said. He further emphasised the fact that the government had created a separate Ministry of Development and Reconstruction of the East and entrusted it to Mrs Ferial Ashraff with the aim of ensuring equal treatment to the North and East as the rest of the country in the field of economic development and progress.
