SL govt. no objection to ICRC using Kankesanthurai
[15 Nov 2000]

Sources revealed that Sri Lankan Government has no objection to the ICRC using Kankesanthurai harbour. But since last June due to the military situation that prevailed in the peninsula, it had to be shifted to the Point Pedro harbour.

However, some web sites have misleadingly stated that the ICRC is yet to secure security guarantees from the government forces and the LTTE to use Kankesanthurai(KKS) harbour.

Meanwhile The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) spokesman in Sri Lanka, Harsha Gunewardena told the local newspapers that the prevailing monsoonal weather conditions compelled the ICRC to temporarily suspend the voyages of the 'City of Trinco' which transports civilians and 'Jaya Gold' which carries patients who have been referred for treatment to Colombo hospitals from Jaffna to Trincomalee.
