Civilian flights to be resumed soon
[15 Nov 2000]

The Sri Lanka Air Force has announced that they will resume civilian passenger flights to Jaffna from November 17.  The Sri Lanka Navy has also resumed the ferry service from the islands of Karainagar and Kayts.  These facilities were established mainly due to the long felt need of the people in the North.

The Ministry of Defence has lined out necessary requirements to be fulfilled before departing or arriving from Jaffna.  Passengers are to obtain a security clearance through the nearest Police Station and a duly completed application to be submitted to the Ministry of Defence through the Police Station.  After the clearance is completed the air tickets will be issued at the Helitours Ticketing Office at Attidiya, Ratmalana.

Passengers from Jaffna are to obtain their security clearances from the Jaffna Security Forces Headquarters and the air tickets will be issued at the Helitours Ticketing Office in Jaffna.

The cost of the return air ticket to Jaffna is Rs. 6000 while Rs. 3500 will be charged for a one-way journey.  After the repairs of the Ferry, the Navy had re-established the Ferry service using the funds and labour of Sri Lanka Navy.  The operation of the Ferry started from 10th November 2000, merely due to the inconveniences that the resident civilians of these islands, i.e. Karainagar and Kayts, were facing.
