Floods create chaos in East leaving thousands homeless

Over 15,000 families were reported to be homeless in Ampara and Batticaloa districts by yesterday as floods caused by heavy monsoon rains.

Relief officials working desperately said at least 2,000 families had been flood put their homes during the past 24 hours.

The rainfall in Batticaloa was 238.5mm yesterday as compared to 138mm during the same period last year. The two districts have also suffered one death each while rain has caused almost complete destruction to their paddy crops.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Services has already released Rs. 1.25 million to provide immediate relief for the victims.

“government agents in the Eastern province have been asked to send in their assessment reports to allocate necessary funds. Divisional Secretaries of Ampara and Batticaloa have also been provided with dry rations and cooked meals,” the Director of Social Services Ms. N. J .Pathirana said.

According to the Meteorological Department officials, north east monsoon rains in the East are likely to continue for few more days.
