President highlighted the necessity of restructuring the Public Service
[21 Nov 2000]

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge noted yesterday that the country’s Public Service to be re-organised and the officials should be properly trained to meet the challenges in this globalisation era.

The President said the Government Officials will have to work ten times harder than at present to achieve the targets set by the Government to develop the country.

“The country’s public service was in a disorganised state when we took over in 1994. The training of Public servants had been neglected. we could re-organized it by 50 per cent during the last six years and we are striving to complete the rest. We have provided them with the necessary facilities and their salaries were increased,” President said while addressing Ministers and other higher officials of five Ministries at the President’s House.

The Government will give priority to the efficiency of the officials rather than to their seniority. We do not reprimand them unnecessarily or consider their politics, the President further added.

The President directed the Deputy Ministers and Senior Ministry Officials to go out into the fields regularly and inspect development activities and discuss the progress made at Progress Review Meetings with the Ministers.
