ICRC exchange Army, LTTE bodies
[22 Nov 2000]

Bodies of 14 combatants killed in fighting in the north over the weekend were exchanged between the Army and the LTTE.

ICRC spokesman Harsha Gunawardane said Army accepted bodies of four soldiers killed off Omanthai and transferred overland to Vavuniya after LTTE handed them to ICRC representatives.

The soldiers had been killed in action on Saturday morning when they were on their way to assault an LTTE strong point. Although seven soldiers were placed on the missing personnel's list, later three personnel had returned to Vavuniya.

Bodies of 10 LTTE terrorists were also transferred from Gurunagar in Jaffna to a village between Kalmunai point and Veddukaddu in Wanni.

"Bodies were transported across the Jaffna lagoon in fishing boats," Mr. Gunawardane said.

The Jaffna based ICRc delegation had made arrangements for an immediate transfer soon after the Jaffna Security Forces Headquarters offered to return bodies of LTTEers killed in action at Madduvil (South) on the previous day.
