Sudden death of Deputy Health Minister

Deputy Health Minister Lionel Gunawardena passed away following a heart attack yesterday while attending a function at the Pelpola Vipassi Foundation.

Lionel was born on 13 July 1942, and received his education at Nalanda College, Minuwangoda.

Later he entered politics and became the Sri Lanka Freedom Party organiser for Gampaha in 1983. At the 1991 Pradeshiya Sabha election, he obtained the highest number of preferences and became the chairman of Gampaha Pradeshiya Sabha. He also became the President of Western Province Pradeshiya Sabha Federation.

In 1994 General Election he entered parliament and was later appointed the Deputy Minister of Internal and International Trade and Commerce.

Under his guidance, the infrastructure facilities in the Gampaha district were rapidly developed. After the last General Election held in October 10, he was elected the Deputy Minister of Health.

Funeral arrangements are to be announced later.
