Peaceful demo in Jaffna against LTTE
[23 Nov 2000]

A crowd of peace loving Jaffna civilians held a demonstration to protest against the cruelties and brutalities frequently exercised by the LTTE on innocent civilians and the slaying of Tamil freelance reporter for BBC radio Malivaganam Nimalarajan.

More than 2000 people including hundreds of University students held a peaceful march and a meeting at the University premises yesterday afternoon, the Military Spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said.

The constant mortar attacks and bomb explosions have taken the lives of many innocent Tamil civilians living in Jaffna peninsula. The classic example for such incident is the death of the eleven-year old school boy who died in the recent LTTE grenade attack at an army picket point.

It is surprising to believe that people could be utterly brutal, ambitious and could be driven hysterical in the battle to conquer territories. LTTE has a proven record in this domain.

However the Jaffna demo itself could be considered as a plea for non violence and a clear indication that Tamil community is thoroughly exhausted of seventeen years of LTTE violence and that they are ultimately ready to make the flag of peace and unity fly high.
