Govt appoints commission to probe Bindunuwewa massacre
[24 Nov 2000]

The Central Executive Committee of the People's Alliance on Wednesday approved the appointment of a commission to probe last month's Bindunuwewa massacre.

The committee also decided to implement the death penalty and other tough laws to combat the escalating crime rate and violence incidents in Sri Lanka.

"The Executive Committee of the People's Alliance was unanimous in supporting the call to implement the death penalty," one official said.

The Committee also agreed to close all the liquor outlets neighboring schools and religious institutions.

The Executive Committee also decided to resume task with the UNP regarding the ongoing efforts to end the North-East conflict and other related matters including the proposed constitutional reforms.

The PA also decided to set up independent elections, judicial and public service commissions as part of the proposed constitutional reforms. But it stressed that it would not agree to appoint an independent police commission.

Wednesday's meeting was the first after President Kumaratunga was appointed president of the People's Alliance.
