No single formula for peace says Hain
[24 Nov 2000]

"There is no single and universal formula for peace. Different conflicts require different solutions. There is no alternative to dialogue in resolving the conflict between the Sri Lanka government and the LTTE," said the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the British Government Peter Hain, who is on a two day visit here.

Answering a question, Minister Hain said the important thing for the Tamil people especially today is to gain more at this crucial hour by negotiating for peace rather than fighting.

On the question why the British government is not banning the LTTE and following the US, Hain said that the Birtish government will introduce legislation next year to outlaw all terrorist organisations.

Adverting to a question whether he considers the LTTE as terrorists, Peter Hain said that the LTTE have been undoubtedly responsible for quite a lot of brutal activities. However, he did not commit himself that the LTTE is a terrorist organisation.

Minister Hain further said, "Britain cares very much about Sri Lanka. In common with the rest of the international community we are appalled at the devastation and misery caused by 18 years of brutal conflict, at the loss of life and economic opportunity, and the tragedies caused by displacement, death and injury to families on both sides throughout the island. Britain stands ready to help in whatever way we can."
