South Asian People’s Summit in Colombo

The South Asian People’s Summit organised by the South Asia Partnership International in collaboration with other civil service organisations will be held in Colombo from December 8 to 10, sources said.

Issues such as eradication of poverty, prevention of human rights violations, improvement of poor governance and the promotion of human development in South Asia will be discussed at the Summit. The Summit is also expected to be a substitute for the SAARC summit, which has continuously been postponed since the last Summit in Sri Lanka in 1998.

The Summit led by the Civil Society aims to build mutual understanding and cooperation among the countries in the SAARC region. Moreover the Summit seeks to capability to induce changes in the region’s economy at a global level.

Around 200 to 300 from all over South Asia are expected to attend the three day summit.
