With the International pressure and the statements made by various important personalities, the view of Tamil diaspora who want LTTE to fight for a separate state has now changed. The demands have divided these opposite attitudes and brought feeling of need for a settlement. The clear statement made by Peter Hain, Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the British Government and Eric Solheim, Norwegian peace envoy on the ethnic issue have made a great impact on the Tamil diaspora to come to this conclusion. Mr. Hain in his visit to Sri Lanka clearly stated, “LTTE accept a solution in which considerable autonomy is devolved to the North and East but a separation was out of the question.” The meeting with Velupillai Prabhakaran at the Wanni jungle, Mr Solheim clearly stated their stand to the LTTE Supremo. This ground situation has now accepted by the Tamil diaspora. They feel the negotiated settlement to the conflict could save the sufferings of the Tamil speaking people of the North and East. Meanwhile, the Norwegian delegation Eric Solheim is in constant touch with Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar is expected to visit Sri Lanka within the next few weeks. Sources confirmed that Mr. Solheim met the Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh to hold talks with regard to the Sri Lankan situation. After these recent developments Mr. Karl Inderfurth, the Assistant Secretary of the State for South Asian Affairs of the US Government is to arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow for a two day visit. He will be accompanied by Mr. Donald Camp, Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs of the National Security Council and Mr. Gary Usery, the Office Director for South Asia. US Embassy sources stated that Mr. Inderfurth’s visit has no direct bearing on the current peace initiatives, and it is widely expected that the Norwegian facilitation process will not go untouched.
