Former Sihala Urumaya President to form a new front
[27 Nov 2000]

Ex-president of the Sihala Urumaya S. L. Gunasekara along with a number of other personalities, have decided to form an organisation devoid of political interest, newspaper reports reveal.

The organisation is to be formed to counter the "anti Sinhalese propaganda meted out by the Norwegians and the British".

According to Mr. Gunasekara the basic objectives of the organisation would be to educate the people of the country about the detrimental effects of the proposed constitution of the government.

But it was no long ago when the people of Sri Lanka clearly made their decision by voting to the ruling party at the general elections, trusting the government to settle the north east problem.

"Even the minorities have come to look up to the present government specially after the sincere effort was made to bring forward the draft constitution and the Norwegian facilitated peace talks with the view of solving the ethnic conflict," political observers said recently.

Britain Deputy Foreign Secretary Peter Hain, who was in Sri Lanka a few days ago specially said that Britain appreciated the peace effort of the Norway in negotiating with the Government and the LTTE.
