A drop in Sri Lanka's population has been expected in the coming years with effective family planning methods being widely practiced in recent years taking a heavy toll on the birth rate, Census and Statistic Department sources revealed yesterday. Crude birth rate ratio (in relation to the total population) has continuously taken a downward trend since 1992. The Crude birth rate ratio which was at 20.5 per 1000 population in 1992 has declined to 17.9 in 1997. Though the rate remained a stagnant 17.3 in 1998 and 1999, it is expected to come down further in 2000, the sources said. Meanwhile according to other statistics the life expectancy of females from 1996 to 2001 is expected to remain at 75.4% while for men it is due to remain at 70.4%. The sources attributed the relatively lower life expectancy of men as a "phenomenon common to most underdeveloped countries". The increasing migration from the country has certainly contributed to a drop in the population in the future, sources added. Male births compared to female’s are still on the rise. But the number of males in the country has gone down due to various circumstances like the war regardless of the fact that they have a higher birth rate.
