LTTE blast civilian bus within 24 hours of leader's offer for peace : 7 killed, 27 injured [29 Nov 2000]

Within 24 hours after LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran offered to start peace talks with the government, the LTTE terrorists yesterday struck brutally again blasting a bus carrying civilians, where many of them were school children.

Seven passengers were killed and 27 others seriously injured when the crowded private bus was travelling from Sripura to Anuradhapura was blown up by an LTTE landmine between Herathalmillewa and Tammennaelawaka in the Anuradhapura district around 6.15 am yesterday.

The attack came just a day after the LTTE's "National Heroes Day".

A school girl, three women and three men were among the dead. The injured were admitted to the Anuradhapura and Kebitigollewa hospitals.

The bus had been carrying around 50 to 70 passengers including a large number of school children attending schools in Medawachchiya and Anuradhapura.

About 40 persons sustained minor injuries and they received treatment at the Kebitigollewa hospital. "Several have lost their legs," a senior police officer said.

Police revealed that the landmine was placed under a bridge on the Kebitigollewa - Medawachchiya road.

Government sources condemning the brutal attack on civilians stated that it was not surprising to see the LTTE attacking again, especially when it was less than 24 hours ago that the LTTE leader talked highly about wanting to achieve peace.
