Dengue now diminishing, but awareness must continue [29 Nov 2000]

The dengue epidemic, which took a human toll of 40 lives, is now diminishing says the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry.

However, the epidemic still continuing in the north and north central provinces with 293 patients still in hospitals islandwide. The Director of the Epidemiology Unit cautions that the public should not ignore safety measures.

"Prevention of dengue is an individual responsibility as well as a collective one. The public, together with the state, has a great role to play. Health Education should not be restricted to Colombo. All resources should be used for prevention and not for cure," he added.
