India’s Defence Ministry has discovered large-scale arms trafficking by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam [LTTE] and insurgent groups operating in India and Myanmar in Andaman and Nicobar Island. A recent deployment of warships, aircraft, and heli copters in the Andaman are severely affected by these rebellious groups. The intelligence groups reported, the presence of insurgent groups in the islands of the Union Territory and increasing arms and narcotic running by them through the sea-lanes of the bay of Bengal. The government deployed two ultra fast warships along with surveillance aircraft and helicopters to intercept high-speed boats. While tightening the security strength in the island the Defence Minister George Fernandez announced of establishing a Tri- Service Command to clamp down on insurgent groups activating in and around the island. Defence sources further confirmed that LTTE and other insurgent groups operating in India and Myanmar have lost their new routs in arms and narcotic trafficking along sea-lanes in the bay of Bengal due to the presence of Security Forces. Defence Ministry assured that setting up of the Tri service will further weaken the terrorist activities. Union Territory of the Union Government of India is believed to be a key operation point of terrorists’ activities for some time. Defence sources further said, “Even with the presence of Security Forces in the region being increased of policing of all the islands was not possible”.
