US support for negotiated political settlement
[30 Nov 2000]

Karl Inderfurth, US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs, said Tuesday that one of the reasons he was in Sri Lanka was to express his government's strong support for a negotiated political solution to the ethnic conflict.

He also highlighted the fact that it should be a solution to protect the dignity and security of all ethnic groups in Sri Lanka.

He further stated that US government supports the territorial integrity and unity of Sri Lanka.

Inderfurth made a special remark on President Kumaratunga's recent statement in parliament. In her statement she said: "The real cause of the ethnic crisis is that the minority communities have not had a fair or reasonable opportunity to share in the political, social and economic power structure in this country."

He further emphasised the fact that all major political parties should agree to a common, bipartisan approach to these negotiations to find a lasting solution to this tragic conflict.

However he insisted that the aim of his visit was to strengthen the bilateral relations. And he further revealed that United States and Sri Lanka have taken a strong common stand against international terrorism.
