LTTE just sought a break – not offered to engage in talks
[04 Dec 2000]

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has not offered to engage in unconditional peace talks with the government but only wanted a break for their depleting armies to recruit new cadres, military sources reveal.

According to senior security officials the LTTE has not offered to engage in unconditional “political” talks with the government as clearly stated in LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s message on War Heroes Day.

By seeking a break the LTTE sought to recruit new cadres, smuggle in fresh consignments of armaments that would help them to match the security forces fire power and also counter Sri Lanka’s diplomatic efforts to isolate the group internationally.

“ A 100-day truce the PA had with the LTTE ended on April 19, 1995 when terrorists resumed hostilities with the swift destruction of two Navy gunboats at Trincomalee and two transport aircrafts. Over 100 servicemen were killed in these attacks,” local newspapers reported.
