PM supports peace process
[04 Dec 2000]

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake said Saturday that he would not impair the peace process  "even in the slightest way" if the LTTE genuinely seeks to begin negotiations, the sources reported.

"If an individual has been engaged in a protracted campaign of terrorism and if that individual is saying that his movement is ready to enter the peace process, I would not impair it even in the slightest way," Prime Minister Wickramanayake said.

He further said that the Government would extend fullest support if the peace offer made by LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was genuine.

The Premier said: "We are obliged to give helping hand to an obdurate individual if he wants to pursue a path of redemption."

"What all of us are yearning for is peace and I do not propose to say anything further than that. We will have to watch the situation," he further said.
