According to Foreign Ministry sources, the Minister on behalf of the President Kumaratunge has also extended an invitation to president Khatami to visit Sri Lanka. The Iranian President has accepted the invitation saying that his propose visit to Sri Lanka would be decided when his future foreign travel programme is drawn up. President Khatami also extended an invitation to the Sri Lankan president to visit Iran. Welcoming Kadirgamar, President Khatami noted with satisfaction the growing co-operation between the two countries. He added that high level exchanges such as the current visit by the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister were mutually beneficial and would strengthen existing bounds of friendship. Foreign Minister recalled the long tradition of close friendship and co-operation between the two countries. He also referred to the mutual co-operation existing between the two countries, in forums such as the Non-aligned Movement, the Group of 77, the Group of 15, where Sri Lankna sponsored the Iranian application for admission and the Indian Ocean Rim-Association for Regional Co-operation. President Khatami acknowledge the steps taken by the Sri Lankan Government to restore peace in the country and conveyed his sincere wishes for all success in arriving at a durable settlement to the ethnic problem as soon as possible.
