Prices of essential items to come down sharply
[06 Dec 2000]

Prices of essential food items are to come down sharply due to two trade agreements signed in India on Friday, sources said.

At least 500 tons of big onions, 3500 tons of lentils and 200 tons of potatoes will be purchased from India at concessionary prices for the festive season. One of the agreements signed in Bangalore is between the Sri Lanka Government and the Karnataka state Agri Producers Cooperative Union and the other is between the CWE and the Indian Government’s Spice Export Corporation.

The second agreement was signed by Food and Marketing Development Ministry Additionasl Secretary, N B Liyanaarachchi on behalf of the CWE and by the Managing Director of the Indian Spce Export Corporation.

In terms of these agreements the CWE will receive the first instalment of 200 tons of potatoes and 200 tons of big onions before December 10. This will enable the CWE to provide an uninterrupted supply of essential food items to consumers during the festive season.
