G. L. briefs Diplomats on government stance
[07 Dec 2000]

Referring to the LTTE leader Prabakaran’s offer for unconditional talks, Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development Minister and Deputy Finance and Planing Minister Prof. G. L. Pieris said that the government was ready to take the ‘bull by the horn’.

Addressing Colombo based diplomats, “We are at the threshold of a historic period. We have to take difficult decisions and we’ll not shrink them,” Professor said.

The government was fully committed to a negotiated settlement to the conflict and was trying to create a balance and flexibility between the Constitutional reform process in Parliament and the proposed talks with the LTTE.

The Minister was of the view that deadlines and timeframes regarding the parliamentary process of Constitutional reform has to be balanced with future negotiations with the LTTE.

“It is a matter of how far you can proceed in Parliament while attempting to reach some understanding with the LTTE,” he said.

The most important factor is the process, which carries this forward. We have resources and international assistance. The government is ready to go ahead on a robust process to achieve lasting peace, the Minister added.
