Doctors leave after Tiger claymore attack
[08 Dec 2000]

Almost 25 doctors serving in Batticaloa returned to Colombo yesterday, fearing for their safety, following the LTTE claymore mine attack on a passenger bus, sources said.

Thousands of other senior officers are residing in these areas and all services are being continued uninterrupted. However, the Government Medical Officer’s Association (GMOA) Secretary, Dr. A Padeniya says that nearly 25 doctors whose native areas were outside the north east had left the area after the claymore mine attack in Batticaloa which injured 20 passengers including three Batticaloa General Hospital doctors.

One of those doctors was severely injured and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital and the other two were sent home.

The passenger bus consisted of a number of persons including the above doctors when it came under attack in Batticaloa.
