LTTE massacre family in Welikanda
[08 Dec 2000]

A group of 20 LTTE terrorists attacked a family at Kurulubedde, Welikanda Polonnaruwa yesterday morning, killing four members of the family including a three-year-old child identified as Gayan Madushankar.

The terrorists had entered the village around 5 am and shot and killed the four members - - K. Wijeratne (45), H.M. Wimalawathie (45), Gayan Madhushantha (17), and W. Somadasa.

A 15-year-old girl who survived the attack had witnessed the horror saying that there were at least 20 among the terrorist gang.

The Tigers had fled after attacking the house with grenades and small fire arms taking away the television set, cassette recorder, a rifle gun and a 12 bore shot gun from the house.

"The LTTE is carrying out brutal attacks of this nature as they cannot face Security Forces offensives in the Jaffna peninsula," Military Spokesman Sanath Karunaratne said.

The incident came a day after a claymore mine blew up a civilian bus in Batticaloa killing 03 passengers and injuring 22.

The claymore mine attack came just a week after the LTTE blasted a crowded private passenger bus on its way from Siripura to Anuradhapura on November 28 killing seven passengers including one school girl and wounding 27 others at Herath Halmillewa.

The horrific attacks came only a few weeks after the LTTE chief offered his willingness for peace in Sri Lanka.

"Some international governments - you know who they are - have labeled us terrorists, even though they know full well we are fighting for out people's freedom," LTTE theoretician and political advisor said recently in their heroe's day address in London.

"The LTTE has always used civilians in their back lash against the government in their so-called freedom struggle for their own people. There are countless times where they have even murdered their own people as well as other minorities. How can this be a freedom struggle if they are using civilians as victims as well as shields?," commented political sources referring to Anton Balasingham's above reference.
