Renowned US lawmaker commends SL on human rights
[08 Dec 2000]

An influential and renowned US lawmaker has commended the Sri Lankan government for establishing an Inter-Ministerial Standing Committee to coordinate responses to human rights issues, sources revealed.

“ The setting up of the Committee is a positive measure that will serve to illustrate the goodwill of the Government of Sri Lanka with regard to sensitive human rights issues that have been brought to the attention of the international community,” said Benjamin A Gilman, Chairman of the International Relations Committee of the US Congress, in a letter to Lankan Ambassador Warnasena Rasputram.

“ I also share Foreign Minister Kadirgarmar’s view on the importance of creating greater awareness of human rights laws among Sri Lankan security and law enforcement officers,” he said.

“ I am therefore heartened to learn that human rights training will be incorporated into the curriculum of study for security and law enforcement officers.”

The permanent high-level Inter Ministerial Standing Committee was established under the Chairmanship of Minister Kadirgamar to bring together relevant material, prepare and transmit responses to communications from UN mechanisms in terms of Sri Lanka’s obligations as a party to important international human rights instruments.
