Police at Ampara recovered a time bomb and a compass on information given by a person who is in police custody. The time bomb weighed 2 ½ kgs. Police is conducting investigations to determine the target of the time bomb, the Special Media Information Centre said. On December 10, in the morning following an attack launched by troops on terrorist bunkers in Ariyalai, they were fired at by the LTTE on their return, with mortars and small arms. However, at least four terrorists were killed and a few others would have been injured during the confrontation. In Mallakam on the same day, troops were attacked whilst searching a house. Later security Forces recovered from the house a dead body of a LTTE cadre along with one pistol with a magazine, communication radio set, one hand grenade and some leaflets. The dead terrorist body was later identified as Arjunan of the LTTE political wing. On December 9 troops patrolling in Nunavil West killed four terrorists in a confrontation. One Officer received minor injuries due to terrorist fire. Troops on offensive operations at Mugamalai confronted a group of terrorists killing two. Troops were not able to recover the dead bodies of the LTTE as terrorist re-enforcements rushed to the location immediately after the confrontation. On December 10 in Karampaikkulam, troops on clearing patrol confronted a group of terrorists. Terrorists engaged troops with small arms and explode claymore mines. On a subsequent search, troops recovered two claymore mines that had been planted targeting troops. Panic- stricken terrorists fled the area with their casualties. Troops suffered no casualties. A lorry belonging to a civilian was hijacked at gunpoint by terrorists. The owner of the lorry, Indrasiri of Habarana Road, Minneriya made a complaint to the Eravur Police that his white Isuzu-150 lorry bearing number 226-7300 was hijacked by terrorists on December 7 whilst he was travelling on the Batticaloa-Valachchenai main road. Police at are conducting investigations into the matter.
