Govt. for consensus on vital issues- G.L. Peiris
[11 Dec 2000]

The Government was trying to adopt a consensus position on vital issues that were critical to national welfare, said Professor G.L Peiris, Minister of Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development and Deputy Minister of Finance.

Addressing the 39th Annual General Meeting of the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries held at the BMICH, Prof. Peiris further said that on Friday the parliament had voted on the Vote on Account and the Government had carried the day with a comfortable majority of 115 to 101- a majority of 14.

Speaking further on this subject he said that in mature democratic societies, there was bipartisan consensus on fundamental issues and policy which enabled consistency and stability. He emphasised that in these countries there was no 'dramatic shift' of policy each time a new government came into office. While the party system necessitated heated debate on the political parties, policy initiatives on important national issues remained consistent.

He said that he had witnessed a refreshing change in Sri Lanka's political landscape in relation to the revival of the Sri Lanka - Korea Parliamentary Association.

Over 75 MP's had participated in the meeting. The Association was of great importance as there were many vital links between the two countries.

Prof. Peiris held talks with all political parties including the main opposition, United National Party (UNP) and the leftist party, JVP. Sources revealed that a satisfactory solution could be reached by mid- January to deal decisively with the ethnic crisis.
