More benefits to North-East doctors and teachers
[12 Dec 2000]

Government will take actions to provide more benefits to teachers and doctors who are serving in north and east areas, sources revealed.

According to Health Ministry sources, a decision regarding transport and insurance for North-East doctors was taken during a discussion between the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) representatives and Ministry officials.

The Ministry has notified that all doctors serving in North and East will be covered by a Rs. one million insurance policy form January 2001. “Cabinet approval has already been granted for this,” a Ministry official said.

The official said that the Ministry has pledged to provide transport facilities for doctors by using ambulances in Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Mannar and Ampara.

The assistance of the International Red Cross will also be sought in this task, he added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has taken steps to pay their risk allowances and salary increment along with their December pay.

An officials spokesman said yesterday that the Education Ministry has already disbursed Rs. 1.59 million for the Provincial Authorities to settle these allowances.

The line Ministry has granted Rs. 15 million to settle the risk allowance of common workers at national schools and collages of education.
