Sri Lanka Navy marks 50th anniversary

The Sri Lanka Navy commemorated its 50th anniversary on Saturday with a colours award ceremony at BMICH, Colombo.

The SL Navy was established under the 'Navy Act' on 9th December 1950.

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar who graced the occasion as the chief guest honoured a group of Navy personnel present by awarding a 'Sri Lanka Navy Gold Jubilee Medal'.

The Post and Telecommunication Minister issued a commemorative stamp and a first day cover to mark the occasion.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka also issued a separate one-rupee coin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Navy.

The one rupee coin weighing 7.13 grammes depict the Navy insignia on one side and a modern ship of the SLN on the other.
