Following extensive discussions held by the Ministry of Health with the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) and Ministries of Finance and Defence, an agreement was reached yesterday regarding transport, insurance and risk allowances for North East doctors, sources confirmed. All doctors serving in the North East will be covered by a one million-rupee insurance policy from January 2001. They will be paid a risk allowance with arrears from January. According to officials, the Ministry has pledged to provide transport for doctors by using ambulances in Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Mannar and Ampara. The assistance of the Red Cross will also be sought in this task and two ambulances had already been sent to Batticaloa.
